What it is & how to read it

The New York Fed's monthly survey of manufacturers in its district, released mid-month and one of the first reads on the current month. A diffusion index centered on zero, not on 50 as the ISM surveys are: above zero means more firms reporting expansion than contraction. Noisy alone, but Empire and the other regional Fed surveys together preview the national ISM later in the month.
