What it is & how to read it

Households and non-financial companies together — total private borrowing in Malta as a share of GDP. It is the sum of the household and corporate series shown separately on this site, not an independent measurement, and it excludes government entirely. The rate of change has historically carried more information than the level: credit booms show up here before they show up anywhere else. Debt here means debt INSTRUMENTS: loans and debt securities plus currency and deposits, trade credit and other accounts payable. The IMF publishes a narrower measure too, and the two are not the same number — every sector on this site uses the broader one so the figures can be compared with each other. Annual, so it moves slowly and revisions to past years are normal. Data: IMF Global Debt Database.
